About Floyd
Floyd Marsden is a multitalented singer-songwriter based in Aotearoa. Having taught herself jazz piano at the age of 12, she quickly found a knack for songwriting. Her stylish instrumentals mixed with her acerbic and often absurd lyricism creates a unique and emotional catalogue of music. Inspired by the works of Arctic Monkeys, Laufey, Alexandra Savior, Ben Folds, and more, her lyrics draw from the conceptual and from the painstakingly realistic.
In 2022, Floyd released her debut album Open Your Eyes, described as “end-of-the-world epic poetry set to catchy-funky-folk-rock” (Nicholas Clark) and “not bad considering” (Floyd Marsden).
In 2024, Floyd Marsden teamed up with Jackson Kidd of Adult Friends, My Cosmic Girl, and Voodoo Bloo fame to create her sophomore album The Disco Lizards. With ten smooth and refined tracks, the project moved away from the heavy guitar anthems of her debut and instead took a jazzier approach, with a string section being incorporated into a majority of the songs. Muzic.NZ called the album ornate, precise, and dryly delivered” and praised Floyd’s “unexpected melodies with vivid flourishes that embellish the already appealing songs.” Soon after, Floyd released her second project with Jackson Kidd – a single called Emily.
Throughout 2025, Floyd spent her time building her teaching business and playing in her jazz rock band New Teeth. The band released an EP, What A Night, in October 2025, receiving reviews that praised the songwriting as “bustling with ideas – jazzy, complex and utterly unique.” The group ultimately disbanded in late 2025 due to scheduling conflicts and creative differences.
In 2026, Floyd launched her third studio album, titled What Does It Mean? featuring collaborations with other NZ artists such as Danica Bryant and Jeline. The album was launched with an intimate show at Wellington’s The Undercurrent, where Floyd was joined by multiple special guests and musical collaborators.
13th Floor reviewed What Does It Mean? as “songs full of love, cherishing moments together, before they’re gone. And the music complements the feel, piano chords to underline a passage or breaking into arpeggios to carry momentum, deliberate and mellow guitar solos, drums that drive and define space and time, synth sounds adding volume and melody. It’s almost hard to picture that Marsden produces all these elements herself, they’re all so accomplished.”
Floyd has played gigs in Aotearoa, Australia, and England, and has performed at some of Wellington’s most exciting and popular events such as Gardens Magic in January 2024 where her show brought in the most audience members of the festival season.
In addition to her solo music and teaching, Floyd also performs drums and backing vocals in Danica Bryant’s live band.
